Behind the design: Luca rug

Take a look at the design process behind our Luca Leopard Rug. Inspired by an original drawing on a piece of OB wall art, Luca the leopard has been handwoven into a striking home textile with a fresh green tone and monochrome design. Every rug has been individually woven on the loom, to give each one a unique and personal finish.

Here, the Home & Gift Team take us through Luca’s development, from mood board to final product.

The inspiration

Luca the leopard was inspired by vintage rugs, where animal motifs were woven into the rug in a stylised way. ‘The artwork for the tiger came from an original drawing designed in our in-house studio,’ says Head of Home & Gift Design Kate Butler. Originally on a piece of wall art, Luca has been adapted to work in a textile setting and given a new lease of life.

Careful consideration was given to the colours to ensure a contemporary and fresh feel. The design team chose a strong green base and subtle pops of pink, combined with a black and white cross pattern in the body of the tiger for an impactful contrast. ‘We wanted to create a rug with personality that would stand out and make people smile,’ says Kate.

The process

Each rug is handwoven in India and is very time consuming to make, requiring a huge amount of skill and focus. Over a period of four days, a loom is used to weave the horizontal thread (weft) through the vertical thread (warp) to create the leopard design. ‘It is a very special piece and no two will be the same,’ says Kate. Due to its high wool content, the Luca rug has a high-quality finish and durable design that will bring a charismatic touch to your living space.
