How to pair shoes with dresses: tips from our fashion stylist

When it comes to finding the right footwear to team with your midi, there are a few things to consider, so we asked our fashion stylist Lynda Bell to give us her expert sartorial advice on the best types of shoes to wear with dresses. Although there are no hard or fast rules, of course (you need to wear what feels right to you), some shoes look better with certain lengths and silhouettes. We’ve put together 8 shoe pairing possibilities for you to try.

The block heel

‘Slip dresses work with literally any shoe, but a block heel is incredibly hardworking when you’re after an extra bit of glam’, advises Lynda. Colourful, velvet or metallic, the best ones give us extra height with a sneaky platform. ‘We love styling pretty occasionwear with towering heels,’ says Lynda. Our Esska heels are chic and comfortable, and this metallic pair looks great with midi dresses.

The loafer

Metallics are having a moment this season, and we love the shiny copper tone of this leather pair. This loafer style looks amazing with an orange dress to highlight the hue, but equally chic with an all black-outfit. Loafers are best paired with a dress that falls just above the ankle to highlight the profile. And yes, you absolutely can wear flats with dresses.

The chunky trainer

‘No longer relegated to the gym, trainers are here to stay and chunky styles are a focus this season,’ says Lynda. Add a casual twist to your favourite mini dress, or wear with a button-down shirt dress to continue the relaxed look. Our Hoff trainers combine thick soles with colourful suede panels for a refreshing update on a classic.

The natural clog

The clog is back and is more fashion-forward than ever. Suede, wood and golden studs combine in this chunky pair, while the thick ankle strap makes the transition from dress to shoe super-seamless and draws attention to their silhouette. ‘Wear with a mini green dress or a hyper-bright midi to add a contrasting tone,’ suggests Lynda.

The flatform sandal

Dad sandals are having a bit of a moment, and these padded flatform sandals are a comfy wardrobe essential that look great with a jumpsuit or midi dress. Loved by celebs and easy to wear on the beach or on a casual day out, this green pair adds a joyous pop of colour that will keep your spirits high even if the temperature doesn’t match. To top it off, Selected Femme’s shoes are made using high-quality sustainable materials so you feel good while looking good.

The open-toe mule

Our favourite heeled mules have a kitten heel and statement knot design – a profile that you’ll definitely want to show off. They naturally suit evening wear or silky dresses and jumpsuits, and will be sure to add an eye-catching hit of colour. With a padded sole and elasticated strap, there’s no compromise on comfort, either. Winning.

The cowboy boot

Bring a touch of the wild west to your wardrobe with a pair of metallic cowboy boots – a trans-seasonal staple that will make an appearance all year round. With a pointed toe and curved ankle opening, this eye-catching pair are best worn with a summer dress in a midi or mini cut to show off the silhouette. ‘The best part? The small heel makes them a super-comfortable day-to-night shoe if you’re having too much fun to go home and get changed,’ says Lynda.

The Mary Jane

The shoe shape that will transition into autumn, the Mary Jane is a style that you’ll certainly want to show off. ‘With a closed toe and double buckle fastening, these go with anything from flowy midi dresses to short minis,’ says Lynda. ‘And gold shoes are always a good idea in my book. They’re an easy way to add a bit of glamour to your everyday or evening look.’
