Behind the design: Bambou furniture collection

Our new Bambou furniture collection has already gathered quite a following on our socials, especially for its impactful look-at-me colouring. Inspired by vintage bamboo furniture, each piece in the range is carefully crafted from Indonesian mahogany indigenous to Indonesia, with partial wooden board. It is then painted in a bold, bright green for a fresh twist.

Here, the Home & Gift Team take us through Bambou’s development, from inspiration to final product.

The inspiration

Vintage bamboo furniture, notably of a 'Chippendale’ style, was the key inspiration behind the collection. ‘We wanted to make a feature of the natural shape and clear, easily identifiable characteristics of a piece of bamboo,’ says Head of Home & Gift Design Kate Butler. The design team then set about exploring the potential shapes and colours that could be included in the range, from bedroom pieces to downstairs items.

‘These are statement pieces that do not need to be bought as an entire range – individual items can be layered into your home to add drama and a talking point’

Mood board

- Colour evoking happiness - bringing this into our homes
- Fresh take on vintage shapes, beautiful bamboo detailing on wood
- Two-door display cabinet would be great in many rooms of the house - kitchen to show off glassware or living room for books, etc
- One bold colour all over – make a statement

Finishing touches

The finalised designs were then sent off to the factory to be put into production. Once the pieces were finished, art director Dan and the design team included them in a campaign photoshoot that was full of optimism and celebrating spring, longer days and entertaining.

'Our hero product is the display cabinet with the glass fronted doors,’ says Kate. ‘We haven’t used glass doors in our furniture before and we felt this was the right place to do it, as it is the perfect product to show off a coveted collection of glassware, dinnerware or any special selection of objects.'
