Earring style guide: trending earring styles for 2024

If you’re after a new pair of earrings, take notes from the experts. Our Jewelry Team have pulled together some earring trends for the year ahead, so whether you’re expanding your jewelry collection or looking for a gift, here's a breakdown of the trending earring styles for 2024.

What are the different types of earrings?

Gold plated earrings

Gold jewellery is perennially in style and pairs well with anything, making gold earrings a go-to for everyday looks and special occasions. Gold-plated earrings tend to be made from brass and coated in a layer of gold, meaning they look as good as the real deal without the extravagant price tag.

Silver earrings

Pure silver is quite a soft material, so our silver jewelry is made from sterling silver or silver 925: an alloy made with 92.5% silver mixed with a stronger metal such as copper. This makes sterling silver earrings a good pick for everyday wear. You can learn more ways to clean and care for your jewellery in our helpful guide.

Stud earrings

Studs are a simple style of earring that sit neatly on your earlobe. You’ll typically find designs featuring a small gemstone or pearl secured with a fastening such as a butterfly back. Thanks to their minimalist design and secure fit, stud earrings make a good choice for newly pierced ears or can be paired with other styles for a buildable multi-piercing look.

Hoop earrings

Just like their name suggests, hoops are circular in style. They tend to attach to your ear with a pass-through fastening, but you’ll also find hoops with stud backs. There are lots of different sizes of hoop earrings to choose from. Huggies are a type of smaller hoop profile, named ‘huggie’ because of the way they sit close to, and essentially hug the ear.

Drop earrings

Drop earrings are a style that drops just below the ear lobe. Anchored from studs, hoops or hook backs, drop earrings have charm accents or small beads and gemstones. They might sound similar to dangle earrings, but the difference is that drop earrings don’t sway when you walk.

Pearl earrings

A classic style, pearl earrings remain a jewelry staple. Whether you choose a freshwater, baroque or faux pearl, the variety of shapes and sizes make them an elegant earring choice. Read more about the different types of pearls in our jewelry.

What’s to come in 2024?

The Jewelry Team explain earring trends for the year ahead.

1. Hoops are here to stay

Hoop earrings aren’t going anywhere in 2024. ‘Our everyday costume huggie style with small drops will have new colourways’, says Senior Jewelry Buyer, Rebecca Jones. ‘Silver costume hoops are also growing, from sleek, high-polish profiles to textured, organic shapes.’ With gold and silver jewelry, texture is key. Think molten and hammered designs, high polish finishes and organic shapes.

2. Drapes and drops

‘Costume drop earrings are getting longer and more statement’, states Rebecca, with stone tassels and textured drops. For gold plated, chain drop earrings with thread through elements remain key. ‘Expect more colour and statement styles for high summer with bright and vibrant stones.’ Silver drop earrings will combine colour and pearls to offer a collection that is ornate, yet clean.

3. Statement studs

The small-scale stone or textured stud remains important, but the new style coming through for SS24 is a larger stud earring. Also known as a 'Bouton' style, these statement studs are impactful enough to wear solo, but if you have multiple piercings, pair with stacking earrings for a bold stack.

4. Return of the pearl

Pearl jewelry has made a major comeback in 2023, with modern takes on the timeless style filling our jewelry boxes. ‘Pearls will always be in our collection’, assures Rebecca, ‘with pearl details coming through on most styles.’ Mother of pearl and paua shell will be used throughout the 2024 collection to bring colour and shine.

5. Mood-boosting beads

Beads remain a great way to add colour and texture to an existing style. Our SS24 collection will feature hand beaded designs across hoop and drop earrings – get ready for more styles to drop.
