Knitwear care

Knitwear offers warmth, softness and comfort – but whether it’s made from wool, animal fibres, synthetic yarns, or blends, these garments benefit from gentle care. To help your knitwear last longer and keep its shape, follow these tips for washing, drying, storing and de-pilling.

Washing and drying knitwear

Some knits are machine washable, while others – especially wool or delicate yarns – may be handwash only, so always check the care label for guidance and refer to our washing care guide.

If handwashing:

1. Use cool or lukewarm water with a gentle detergent.
2. Soak for 10-15 minutes, then gently squeeze the water out – don’t wring or rub the knitwear.
3. Rinse in clean water.

If machine washing:

1. Wash on a cool and gentle cycle with a gentle detergent - use a delicates or wool cycle if possible.
2. Place the item in a laundry bag to reduce friction and stretching.
3. Avoid washing with heavy items like jeans or towels.

When drying:

1. Never wring out knitwear, instead squeeze gently to remove excess water.
2. Air-dry the item and reshape while damp, smoothing out wrinkles, sleeves and necklines.
3. Don’t dry knitwear on a radiator or in a tumble dryer.

Storing knitwear

Fold, don’t hang - hanging knitwear can cause it to stretch out or develop hanger marks, especially at the shoulders. Knitwear is best stored folded in drawers or on shelves, ideally with a lavender sachet to help naturally repel moths and other pests.
