Mix and match: ideas to improve your home’s lighting

Create an original lamp fixture to suit your mood and style with our new mix and match lighting collection. Our unique pick and mix system gives you the chance to choose your lamp bases and shades to create your own design.

Take the lead from our lighting team with practical tips on how to customise your lamp, where to place it, and the inspiration behind our new concept.

How does it work?

With three bases and five shades to choose from, every element has been designed to work cohesively together and can be bought individually, so the design decisions are down to you.

Sometimes just a few small changes can be enough to change the feel of a space, and the Home & Gift Team wanted to create a product that could refresh your décor in a quick, easy (and affordable) way. The mix and match collection allows you the flexibility to pick and choose between colours, materials and silhouettes, and means you can change up your textures and tones between seasons too.

In the bedroom

Think about the kind of mood you want to bring to your bedroom and use this when choosing your pairing. Build on an existing colour scheme by drawing on shades that are prominent in your room or perk up an unloved corner with a contrasting design. Our Ikat shade features a dynamic print designed in our studios and is compact enough to place on a small bedside table.

Always consider how the fabric will affect the strength of the light. Natural, cotton fabrics will soften and diffuse the light more than a plush velvet, which will change how the light emits from above and below the shade.

In the living room

Layering your living room light is how you create a welcoming space that transitions from daytime to evening. Transform an awkward corner into an inviting reading nook with an accent chair and a pendant light to add directional light in one area. On furniture or shelving, add extra pops of light with several table lamps to create a warm ambience. The rich tones of our mango wood furniture pair well with a fluted lamp base and pink marble shade.

In the dining room

A ceiling light hanging above your dining table creates an intimate feel that’s perfect for hosting. Our mix and match shades come with a reversible gimble, meaning you can switch between a table lamp shade and a ceiling shade depending on your space. Or, try our larger Ero lamp shades for an eye-catching cluster.

In the hallway

Provide a welcoming entrance by updating the lighting in your hallway. It’s a high-traffic area that can be an awkward space to illuminate, but the right lighting will add depth and character. Introduce a pop of colour with a plush velvet table lamp trimmed with a contrasting tassel for an elevated feel. As well as providing useful accent lighting, it will serve as a decorative object in its own right.
