Denim for days: four spring updates to your wardrobe style staple

If there’s one key clothing item to invest in season after season, it’s denim. Whether it's a pair of wear-on-repeat jeans, a casual jacket or a dress-up-or-down jumpsuit, denim is the wardrobe gift that keeps on giving. These new-in styles make it easy to mix and match versatile looks, layering up or down depending on the weather, and accessorising to suit the look. Want to bring your jeans obsession into the new season? Denim outfit-building starts here.

Top to toe

We all know how versatile jumpsuits can be, offering a one-and-done outfit alternative to your trusty jeans-and-top combo. ‘The great thing about a jumpsuit is how accessories can totally change the look depending on the occasion,’ says OB Fashion Stylist Lynda Spence. ‘Go casual with trainers or pumps for springtime, take it out for drinks with a heel or toughen it up with a chunky boot while the weather is still warming up.’ Finish with a bright red bag and pumps for a colour-pop finish.

Dial-it-back drawstring

Spring always feels lighter, more laid-back and relaxed, which is why easy-wear design details such as elasticated waists and softer silhouettes feel so right for jeans at this time of year. 'We're seeing an emphasis on a "refined lounge" look and this flattering barrel-leg style balances comfort with a preppy, subtly sporty touch,’ says Lynda. Lean into that casual weekend vibe with a baseball cap and this season’s key footwear trend, the boat shoe. ‘Add chunky gold jewellery to give your outfit an instantly more pulled-together look.’

Stylist tip

For a more polished look, upscale your denim with a ballet pump or a pointed toe, and keep everything else in your outfit tonal with a similar colour palette for a more considered finish.

Jacket update

Don’t forget the trusty denim jacket – only this spring’s version comes with a variety of shades and design details such as hero collars and relaxed fits.

We loved styling this chocolate-brown jacket for our spring campaign shoot,’ says Lynda. 'The sailor collar gives it a more elevated feel to its traditional predecessor, subtly working in this season’s nautical nod. Pair with accessories in a similar colour palette for a sophisticated tonal look, adding a casually knotted triangle scarf for extra style points.’

The wide-leg crop

While barrel-leg jeans are going nowhere, this season we're also seeing a wide, cropped fit for a looser, lightweight feel that leans into the promise of warmer days ahead. ‘Cropped jeans are the natural spring/summer silhouette,’ says Lynda. ‘Hitting just above the ankle, their breezy, relaxed style makes them ideal for transitional dressing as the sun starts to make more of an appearance.’

Cropped styles also put the focus on your footwear, pairing easily with everything from ankle boots and loafers to sandals and heels, depending on your mood and occasion. ‘Keep it relaxed with a statement sweater, delicate jewellery and a pair of fresh white trainers for a stylish off-duty look that hits peak weekend outfitting,’ recommends Lynda.
