How to make your home smell (and feel) like Christmas

There are so many different smells associated with Christmas. Pine trees, warm spices, citrus fruits, and fresh-out-of-the-oven home baking are just a few of the fragrances that make the festive season so tantalisingly cosy. Because winter’s dark nights and chilly weather create an overwhelming desire to hibernate at home, we’ve curated some ideas to help you feather your nest with fragrance and boost your Christmas spirit for the season ahead.

1. Light a Christmas candle

Introduce a flickering light and soft scented glow to your home by dotting Christmas candles in every room. Choose a scent that’s warm and spicy to signal the start of the festive season. This year, a favourite is our Noel Frankincense & Cedarwood Candle. Our candle buyer, Cloudia, wanted to pair the traditional scents of Christmas with fresh fruity notes to “ignite a lightness and sense of joy”. It’s filled with an intoxicating blend of frankincense, cedarwood, and cinnamon, “lifted with peach and amber to give a warming and sweet finish”, says Cloudia. You could also layer different fragrances by burning the trio in our Noel Mini Candles Set, which includes flavours of fruity Fig, spicy Orange & Cinnamon, and rich Gold & Myrrh.

2. Decorate with fresh greenery

If you think it’s a little too early to put your Christmas tree up, start by dressing your home with small sprigs of pine instead. Place fresh cuttings of this quintessential Christmas greenery on your mantelpiece or in a vase, or decorate with artificial garlands you can use year after year. Add a festive fragrance to these by drying your own citrus fruits, then studding the rinds with cloves to add a hint of warm spice, before nestling them in and around the faux leaves.

3. Use an oil burner or diffuser

For a concentrated, slow-release scent, try burning a flavoured oil blend in an oil burner. Not only will it add fragrance to your home, but it will also add a touch of festive decoration too. For a smoke-free option, swap the oil burner for a set-it-and-forget-it electric diffuser. It requires only a few drops of oil mixed with water and has different time settings so you don’t have to remember to turn it off. Use our Fig & Apple fragrance oil to fill your home with tasty notes of fruity apple and cassis, layered with vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon for an extra sweet finish.

4. Add tealights to your tablescape

With party season upon us, and a season of home entertaining on the cards, create a lively festive tablescape by dotting the table with insta-worthy swirly candles. They’re fragrance-free, so introduce a Christmassy scent with peppermint or citrus-scented tealights, camouflaged in a frosted glass star candle holder that will create a soft diffused glow on your table or mantlepiece.

5. Do some baking

Fill your home with wafts of fresh-out-the-oven Christmas baking – ‘tis the season to indulge, after all. With so many tasty flavours synonymous with the festive season, including warm spices, citrus, dried fruits and – of course – chocolate, you can bake anything from spiced gingerbread biscuits (that the kids can help decorate), to boozy fruit-filled Christmas cake and sweet chocolate brownies. Not only will they infuse your house with flavours as they cook, you’ll enjoy devouring them when they’re baked, too.
