How to wear reusable face coverings

As part of the government response to Covid-19 across the UK and Ireland, we should all wear face masks or reusable face coverings while on public transport, and in shops and supermarkets. To make sure you’re using your fabric or cloth covering as safely as possible, follow our how-to guide and video. Discover the best way to put the face covering on, properly handle it, and adjust the fit to suit your face.

How should I put on my face covering?

Always start by washing your hands with soap and water before putting your face covering on and taking it off. Avoid touching your face or the fabric of the covering where possible.

1. Handle by the ear loops
Handle by the ear loops. Pick up the face covering by the ear loops only, taking care to avoid touching the fabric of the covering itself.
2. Place over your nose, mouth and chin
Lightly pinch the top and bottom of the face covering to separate the pleats and ensure the fabric is covering your nose, mouth and chin.
3. Removing the face covering
When you need to remove the face covering, pull it from the bottom and away from your mouth and chin.

How do I make the face covering fit my face?

A standard-fit covering can expose the sides of your face if it is too loose fitting. Here are two ways you can alter the covering to ensure a snug fit across your nose, mouth and chin.

1. Tie knots in the ear loops
Fold the face covering in half lengthwise, and tie knots in the elastic loops. Ensure the knots sit as close to the fabric of the covering as possible, then hook the elastic loops over your ears and tuck any extra fabric into the side so it’s nice and smooth.
2. Shorten the ear loops
Shorten the elastic loops by tying knots at the end where they would sit behind your ears. This will make them shorter, and make the covering feel more secure across your face.
How often should I wash my face covering?
You should wash your cloth face covering after every use. Clean your face mask on a 60 degree wash with your usual detergent. Make sure the covering is washed and fully dried before you wear it again.
Can I use a filter with these cloth face coverings?
Yes, these face coverings have a pocket at the side for you to insert your own filter. Make sure you remove and dispose of the filter after every use, and before you wash the mask.
